Our interpreting experience is also the result of many years serving industrial companies.

In over 13 years of professional interpreting work, besides the many years spent in large high-tech companies we have accumulated considerable experience in many technical and non-technical fields alike.

Since it is almost impossible or even futile and burdensome for us to list and keeping up-to-date all our interpreting jobs, in this page we provide only a list of the main subject matters we have been called to deal with.

A good interpreter's hallmarks

Of course linguistic skills are of paramount importance. However often they are not enough. In fact, considering that every single interpreting service is different from all the others because the client himself is different and thus different is the way he values the interpreter's role, basically the interpreter should:

Understand the client's requirements, i.e. what he exactly wants to achieve with the interpreter's help. If he doesn't provide such information the interpreter should simply ask and explain that this is in the client's interest. It should be noted that many clients have never used an interpreter before, thus they simply don't know how what this type of service involves.
Based on the actual situation, understand if he/she should strictly confine to exactly translating the message or can take some forms of initiative to try to complete it or optimise it. (Some clients just expect the interpreter to refrain from taking any initiative at all, while others want right that, i.e. a help or the interpreter to function as a filter. In such case the interpreter should feel and act as a member of a team.
Have good interpersonal skills even when the client and/or the other party are unpleasant, i.e. by using in absolutely all situations a professional way of behaving and speaking. (Here the experience gained when dealing with superiors and/or clients in a company certainly helps.)
Forget the way he/she normally is and adapt to the approach set by the client. Only in case of behavioural or expressive excesses and if it's absolutely clear that this won't harm the successful conclusion of the negotiation, with the utmost care he/she can try to tone down such going beyond reasonable limits.
Keep one's head even when the meeting overheats (this is chiefly an endowment) and possibly try to understand whether he/she can attempt to restore the discussion harmony with the help of smiles or a gag.

To afford all this the interpreter should be either especially endowed or acquire such abilities through direct experience, which on its turn takes much time.

How we formed ourselves as interpreters

We carried out our first Italian-Japanese interpreting job in Milano in 1996 for a world-wide known jewellery company. Before that, Taeko Kani was the secretary of the two Japanese Vice-Presidents of the Japanese company she had worked for until 1996, where she was in charge of translation and interpreting activities for the visiting head office executives and the local media. Since then she has been developing her linguistic skills in many other industrial sectors, mostly small and medium-size Italian and Japanese companies willing to establish a business relationship. From jewellery, then, to many other fields - including technical ones - with a stream of opportunities further developed after our move to Japan in 1977.

Mario Cerutti's professional and educational profile is a synthesis of the specialisations and the general expertise, including managerial skills, which he built during many years in large international high-tech companies.
