Our approach to Japanese interpreting

As pertains to language, interpreting is the act of facilitating mutual understanding between people who ignore the partner's language. Failing to do this in working environments would be too risky, hence the figure of the interpreter is essential if it's impossible to properly communicate in a common language. We specialize in Japanese-Italian consecutive interpreting.

“Interpreting Service” — Table of contents

Aliseo Japan® is an an experienced translation and interpreting studio specializing in Japanese and Italian in a variety of application areas. We have been based in Japan since 1997 and provide this service throughout the whole country. We do not operate in Italy, nor do we send outside interpreters overseas. A Japanese and Italian translation service completes the range of our language services.

Our Japanese-Italian consecutive interpreting service

An increasing number of Italians and Japanese speak English at a higher level than in the past (albeit at a very variable level of actual knowledge)—something which reflects positively on both the business world and the wider benchmark of socio-cultural progress.

Our interpreting language pairs:

  • Italian–Japanese
  • English-Italian

But, in addition to agreeing upon a common language or jargon for technical purposes in order to understand/express themselves as much as is necessary, international executives looking to enter a long-term alliance with each other must also be able to express themselves correctly at a much wider and more multi-sectoral level and establish a relationship of trust at a personal level. This is a difficult task if communication is hampered by the limited ability to speak and understand the common language (English), which does not contribute to achieving the necessary empathy and deepening the professional relationship to make it more solid and lasting.

Some cultures have profound differences between them—Japanese and Italian, for example—particularly when it comes to business settings. The Japanese employ wholly unique and abstruse communication cues which can result in embarrassing and unproductive situations for those not well-versed in them. For this reason, it may sometimes be more appropriate to select a Japanese native speaker as an interpreter rather than an Italian, and indeed many Japanese companies feel more comfortable if they can speak through a Japanese mother tongue interpreter.

Please note: our interpreting service is limited to Japan.

But there is another aspect that not infrequently escapes the awareness of two professionals who decide to communicate in the lingua franca: the overestimation of their ability to use it and understand it correctly, which often leads to embarrassing situations that cannot be remedied easily. We see this more often than it can be imagined.

The Japanese interpreter plays an important role here, too; more than simply providing a mechanism for linguistic transposition, the interpreter serves as a bridge that brings the two parties closer together and allows them to communicate more freely and with all the intended nuances of their native languages.

The interpreter's work, in fact, is not only about language abilities. It also requires certain skills and basic interpersonal attitudes without which it can not be fully successful. We invite you to read our professional consecutive interpreting requirements page.

Consecutive Italian and Japanese interpreting only

Please note that we only offer consecutive interpreting in Japanese and Italian (not simultaneous or conference interpreting), which is particularly suitable for small or medium-size companies that wish to set up a new business or already have an ongoing business relationship in Japan, and therefore need an interpreter who is expert in various fields.

If I am selling to you, I speak your language. If I am buying, dann müssen Sie Deutsch sprechen!

In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter assists the customer by listening to a digestible amount of speech in one language then rendering what was said into the target language while referring to his or her notes. This is the most common type of interpreting used in meetings, business lunches, company visits, and training courses.

Our stringent professional standards and strong interpersonal skills have generated a long list of satisfied clients, particularly in our Italian-Japanese interpreting service.

Our strengths in Japanese and Italian interpreting

Our corporate experience in several different positions was a great primer for us, and twenty years of professional interpreting experience here in Japan has given us the confidence needed to make the most of suboptimal scenarios. Our interpreting service has evolved into what we consider to be a critical tool for building successful relationships between Italian and Japanese companies, in particular for more operational small and medium-sized companies that need a more targeted and all-embracing language support which may be completed with our Japanese-Italian translation service for any post-interpreting activities.

Our Japanese and Italian interpreting experience

Our years of employment at large tech companies were followed up by two decades spent working as professional interpreters, giving us considerable Japanese-Italian and English-Italian interpreting experience in a number of technical and non-technical fields.

However, since an exhaustive list of our work would be time-consuming and ultimately meaningless, on this page we have provided a summary of the interpreting projects that significantly contributed to our overall ability.

Please note that we do not offer simultaneous or conference interpreting services (only consecutive interpreting).
